Many individuals these days are concerned about better nutrition. Improvements to diet and vitamin supplementation are two popular ways we try to take in more of the nutrients we need. Yet how nutritious are the foods we eat, and how beneficial are our supplements? With so many varieties available, how do we choose the best road to better health?
Synthetic, Natural, or Organic? The majority of vitamins sold in pill or tablet form are synthetic varieties. These are the simplest and least expensive sources of essential nutrients. When the molecular structure of synthetic vitamins mirrors that of vitamins found in “natural” sources exactly, there is likely to be little difference among their effects on the body. But what about organic natural sources vs. natural or synthetic ones? Is there any difference in the effect of an organic whole food vitamin supplement?
Organically grown foods would seem by definition to be healthier. Organic food production involves a more natural agricultural method. It relies on resource recycling for soil enhancement and aims to improve agricultural methods and conditions. Unnatural chemicals or additives such as pesticides and hormones are avoided in organic agricultural production.
Vitamins derived from plants or whole foods that are organically grown offer the same benefits as other organic products. They contain only minimal traces of chemical residue and promote less environmentally intrusive farming methods. Organic vs. Organic Whole Food An organic whole food vitamin supplement is perhaps the best choice of all for individuals who are concerned about optimum nutrient intake. So called “superfoods” provide organic sources of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes our bodies need in their natural, whole-food form. Organically grown nuts, grains and seeds are common whole food sources of vitamins. Some common organic superfoods include:
- Sea vegetables and greens
- Wheat grass
- Barley grass
- Quinoa
- Tofu and soy milk
- Green tea
Whole food organic vitamin supplements are not typically marketed or labeled as containing isolated vitamins or minerals. Rather, they are considered to collectively contain a wide variety of the vitamins and minerals found naturally in their ingredients.
How Do I Decide? The decision to use a synthetic, natural, organic, or whole food organic vitamin supplement is purely a matter of individual preference. Contrary to what many commercials and advertisements will state, any source of vitamins is likely to be of some benefit to individuals’ overall health when taken regularly. Choosing to go organic or to take your vitamins via whole foods makes sense for certain individuals. In most cases, the decision reflects lifestyle choices already in place. Examine your level of comfort with ingesting the ingredients listed on whatever product you decide to try. Check your budget, too and opt for what’s truly in your personal best interest.
